Firm-Specific Cost Savings and Market Power
نویسندگان
چکیده
We report a policy experiment that illustrates a potential problem of using historical pass-through rates as a means of predicting the competitive consequences of projected firmspecific cost savings in antitrust contexts, particularly in merger analysis. The effects of cost savings on welfare can vary vastly, depending on how the savings affect the industry supply schedule. In a capacity-constrained price-setting oligopoly, we observe that cost savings can overwhelm behaviorally salient market power incentives when the savings affect marginal (high cost) units. However, cost savings of the same magnitude on an infra-marginal unit leave market power unchanged. Financial assistance from the National Science Foundation (SBR 93-19842) is gratefully acknowledged. In the first chapter, I investigate a merger between price-setting newsvendors in an oligopolistic market. It is well-known that inventory pooling can greatly reduce inventory costs in a centralized distribution system because it helps reduce aggregate demand uncertainty. Although such statistical economies of scale are important benefits of a retail merger, the extant literature models cost sa...
متن کاملEstimation of Cost Effi ciency without Cost Data
One of the advantages of estimating a conduct parameter game, compared with the Lerner index, is that the knowledge of cost shifters is suffi cient to get the “implied marginal cost”estimates. Stochastic frontier literature suffers from the same problem that it requires a detailed data set in order to estimate cost effi ciencies of the firms. This paper develops a model to estimate firm specifi...

In this research we s...
متن کاملThe quiet life hypothesis in banking - Evidence from German savings banks
The 'quiet life hypothesis (QLH)' posits that banks enjoy the advantages of market power in terms of foregone revenues or cost savings. We suggest a uni ed approach to measure competition and e ciency simultaneously to test this hypothesis. We estimate bank-speci c Lerner indices as measures of competition and test if cost and pro t e ciency are negatively related to market power in the case of...
